It was almost like Christmas. I ordered a 2-pack of these Lodge L4LP3 cast iron loaf pans.
We have wanted to try our hand at some cast iron bakeware out on the Kamado grill. Sure, it’s easy enough to make bread indoors — but, indoor baking doesn’t get me outside doing stuff. I’ll try some outdoor baking for a change.
Cooking outdoors over hot coals with cast iron allow you to move towards greater self-sufficiency. Who knows when fire pit cooking will again be that sought after life-skill?
Lodge L4LP3 Cast Iron Loaf Pan – Review
We picked up a 2-pack of these Lodge L4LP3 cast iron loaf pans from Amazon. Some folks might call them a cast iron bread pan. Since Lodge calls these loaf pans, that is what we’re going with.
As with all Lodge products, customer reviews are very favorable, evidence of a quality product. Check here for the latest information and current Amazon pricing for the Lodge L4LP3 cast iron loaf pan.
Many Amazon reviewers reported that their loaf pans were stuck together. Those same reviewers didn’t provide much detail. But this is our experience:
Our two Lodge L4LP3 cast iron loaf pans arrived overnight in a sealed cardboard box with Amazon Prime shipping. Both loaf pans were nestled inside each other separated by a thick layer of corrugated packing paper. We did try to pull them apart — giving the handles a gentle tug, no luck.
Using some good old-fashion know-how, I picked up a piece of scrap wood and wedged it between one set of the handles. POP, they loosened up right away using just a bit of leverage, easy enough, no more problems.
As with all of our newly acquired cast iron cookware, we look it over and make sure there are no defects. I did once get a piece of Lodge cast iron cookware, new out of the box that was cracked. The folks over at Lodge sent out a replacement right away, no questions asked. But no issues noted today, just rugged dependable Lodge quality.

Cooking with cast iron allow you to move towards greater self-sufficiency. So what do we mean by that. Instead of using those tin loaf pans, you now have time-tested and quality cast iron. Instead of using that fancy modern-day stove with all digital temperature control, — why not bake using your grill? Practice this for a while, practice judging cooking temperature and heat. Then try some your hand at fire-pit bread.
Cast iron is my favorite cooking vessel.
Our first Kamado bakeware attempt was to push the envelope away from traditional and make some low carb bread. Our own recipe is a variation of the keto bread recipe found here. I’ll detail the specifics later in another post.
This pan performed admirably, exactly how a Lodge product should perform. I am no bread-making expert. That heavy cast iron does evenly distribute the heat, — no hotspots. After a bit of time cooling, the bread plopped out of the pan onto the cooling rack. Minimal clean up.
My Kamado Joe smoky low carb bread came out pretty darned tasty.
Yes, you need a set of these Lodge L4LP3 cast iron loaf pans for your own outdoor bakeware toolset. Of course, there is nothing wrong using them inside of that fancy digital thermostat controlled oven.

Just wanted to say thank you for the information you provided about the Lodge Loaf Pans. My set of two arrived stuck together and after struggling for a few minutes trying to separate them, I Googled for a solution and found your review/article. Such a easy, quick fix but I totally didn’t even think of doing this! LOL Your solution should be glued to every loaf pan Lodge sells!
Thanks again,
