Got up early and hit the road heading out to the Nottoway River for some fishing action.
The weather forecast predicted sunny skies and warm, if not downright hot temperatures. The weatherman was right on today. It did get hot.
My usual fishing partner Scott was not able to make this last minute trip. So I packed up the fishing kayak and got on the road.
Nottoway River Fishing Report May 12, 2018
Actually, there wasn’t much packing. I went up to the Nottoway last Saturday for another last minute fishing trip.
Today, we launched at the Cary’s Bridge ramp. The plan was to paddle up stream and float back. I was on the water at 07:50. Just a bit later than hoped. Next time, I want to be paddling up river right at day break.
The hydrograph was showing the water running at 5 feet. The river was still recovering from a 12-foot spike due to rain. 16 feet is flood stage.
After an hour of paddling up stream, up under the Tobacco Heritage Trail (looking at Google Maps), and for another 2 miles or so, it was time to fish.
It wasn’t long before a little sunfish took a smaller jig head rigged up with a black and pink BassPro Bumblebee plastic with a chrome spinner near a laydown.
A few more sunfish also came for a visit before heading back out into the water before the action slowed down.
Started flipping a junebug 4 inch c-tail worm here and there without any luck. Apparently the fish weren’t interested.
I lost a few of the Bumblebee rigs in the submerged tree branches. There is a lot of sunken logs in this part of the river.
At a small creek, a nice 12-inch bass took the Bumblebee plastic spinning jigs. That bass turned out to be the big one of the day.
Soon, another smaller bass took the same bait.
A few more bluegill and that was it. I just floated and drifted, enjoying the nice weather.
I drifted past the remains of a trolling motor. I’m sure there is a story here.
It was a great day to be outside!
